"Fractional" has spread from CFOs to marketing chiefs to development teams, and like most borrowed terms it gets used loosely. So here is the plain-English version: a fractional dev team is a slice of a senior team that ships your product every month, for a monthly price — without you hiring anyone.

That one sentence hides most of what matters. This post unpacks how the arrangement actually runs, month to month, and how to tell a well-run one from an hourly engagement wearing a new name.

The Core Idea: Buy Outcomes, Not Hours

The traditional ways to get development done are hiring (a person's full attention, at full-time cost, with recruiting risk) and hourly contracting (flexible, but the meter rewards time spent rather than results shipped).

A fractional team replaces both meters with one question: what shipped this month?

In practice, each month starts with a short agreed list — the features, fixes, and improvements that will land. The month is judged against that list. Not hours logged, not people allocated, not meetings attended. If the arrangement you are evaluating reports its progress in hours, it is hourly contracting with better branding.

What a Month Looks Like

A well-run pod month has a simple rhythm:

Start: agree the month's outcomes. Short list, plain language, written down.
During: work ships continuously — not saved up for a month-end reveal. You watch progress on a live URL whenever you like. On our Starter tier, a weekly check-in call is where you and the team plan and steer together; on Standard, a dedicated PM runs daily standups with you and the team works in your Slack and tools.
End: review what shipped, set the next month's list. Adjust the tier of the pod up or down if the roadmap demands it.

The live URL deserves a sentence of its own. The traditional agency model rations visibility — status meetings, demo days, weekly reports. A pod inverts this: the latest state of the work is always running at a link you can open at 11pm on a Sunday. Visibility stops being something you request and becomes something you have.

The Quality Machinery

Ongoing monthly work has a failure mode every founder who has maintained software knows: this month's feature quietly breaks last month's. Guarding against it is what separates a system from a string of one-off jobs. Two pieces of machinery matter.

The comparison that matters is not against zero — it is against the alternatives. A senior full-time hire costs a multiple of a pod, plus recruiting time and the risk of a bad match, and small products rarely need forty hours every week anyway. Hourly contractors look cheaper per unit until you count the management overhead you carry and the incentive mismatch you fund.

A pod fits when the product is real and needs steady shipping — post-launch products with a feature backlog, businesses whose technical co-founder or agency moved on, teams that need senior capability but not a senior salary. It does not fit when there is no steady stream of work; for a one-off defined project, a fixed-scope build is the honest recommendation, and a good provider will say so.

Questions That Reveal Quality

Evaluating any fractional arrangement — ours included — four questions do most of the work:

How do I see progress between updates? (The answer should be "whenever you want," not a meeting cadence.)
What stops this month's work from breaking last month's? (Listen for tests and review, not reassurance.)
Who owns the code? (You. Anything else is lock-in.)
What happens when I need more one month and less the next? (Months should flex; lock-ins should be short.)

Good answers to all four describe a system that survives its own success — because the real test of ongoing development is not the first month. It is the twelfth.
